Peace Lutheran School & Early Childhood Center

Welcome to Peace Lutheran School and Early Childhood Center. Education has always been a top priority at Peace. In fact, it’s our very foundation. The first Peace building in 1941 was actually a school at what is now known as our Adams Campus on Adams Avenue in Saginaw. Families began worshiping in the upstairs of the K-8 school, and eventually a gymnasium was added on in 1952 and a sanctuary was built in 1960. By 2003, our school had outgrown its original home on Adams, and our current Peace Lutheran School was built at 3161 Lawndale Road in Saginaw Township. Our Lawndale Campus houses our nationally acclaimed K-8 school, as well as our award-winning Early Childhood Center. We provide families a single drop-off point where we care for infants, nurture preschoolers, and love and educate all students with high-quality curriculum — care for all ages under one roof. Take a look around. We think you’ll like what you see.

Fit for a King

When some students of Peace Lutheran School participated in the Great Lakes Bay Region Lutheran Schools play “Lion King Jr.,” a joint production among Lutheran schools in the area, there was no question where they would turn for props and set design. With our beautiful new art studio, Peace had the space, resources and talent to create the beautiful set pieces for the play. In this photo, you see the Peace art students who helped make the props — and they even took the pieces for a parade throughout the school before they were delivered to the set at the Peace Adams Campus.

A Christmas Miracle

Every year at Peace Lutheran School, a Christmas miracle occurs. The Crossing is magically transformed for one day only into a Christmas shopping wonderland! OK, maybe it’s not so much magic as it is the hard work of Peace parent elves via the PTL (Parent Teacher League). But that makes it no less magical: Our students get to shop for super affordable Christmas gifts for their loved ones. It is one of our favorite days of the year!

Student Laptops

Peace utilizes technology throughout its entire curriculum and subject areas where appropriate. In addition to our Chromebook Cart that travels from class to class, our middle-schoolers enjoy the benefits of our 1-to-1 Laptop Program. This program puts brand-new laptop computers into the hands of individual students in Grades 6-8, at a reasonable cost. These devices are available to purchase through the school and are taken home daily to aid in homework. While the laptops are turned in at the end of each school year for maintenance and updates, the laptops become the student’s property at the end of his or her eighth-grade year.

Toddler Care

The Peace Toddler Care program is for the child who is ready to follow a slightly structured routine with some teacher-directed activities and is able to walk confidently on his or her own. Toddlers need caregivers who will take the time to be with them, to meet their needs, and to be emotionally available to them. Consistent love, comfort, encouragement and support are all essential. From a calm, affirming adult, young children will begin to form a positive, healthy perspective about themselves and others. They will begin to appreciate the power of forgiveness. And specifically, they will learn about Jesus. The standards for our teacher-directed activities are:

EXPLORE: Standards relating to pre-math and pre-science skill development

EXPRESS: Standards addressing areas of communication (listening, speaking, pre-writing and pre-reading activities)

RELATE: Standards concerned with the young child’s sense of self as he or she also grows socially, emotionally and in interactive play skills

CREATE: Standards focusing on a young child’s growing understanding of his or her world and response to it through art, dance, role play and music

Mystery Hangouts

A favorite technology assignment at Peace Lutheran School has been the Mystery Hangout video chat with a class from an unknown school/location. Mystery Hangouts allow classes in different parts of the United States or even the world to chat via a video “hangout” and ask each other questions to try to guess where the other class is located. In this particular photo, it was revealed after several rounds of clues that Peace fourth-graders were talking to students not far from our location at all — from Faith Lutheran in Bay City (MI)!

'Dad is Home'

“I think a ‘ministry of presence’ is important from a pastor. I can remember Pastor Weis talking to me about how the Roman Catholic Church may have hit the nail on the head in referring to their clergy as ‘father.’ In many ways, that is what a pastor is, a spiritual father. There's something to be said for how safe it feels when ‘dad is home,’ if you will, as opposed to when he's not. I remember Pastor Weis saying it and at the time not fully understanding or appreciating how true his words were. These days I have much more of an appreciation for having a pastor specifically at the school so that these kids, both big and small — and that includes our staff and the school families — know that ‘dad is home.’ At least, that's my hope and prayer.”

Resource Room

Peace Lutheran employs a full-time teacher who facilitates unique learning opportunities for students in our Resource Room. Teachers and volunteers aid instruction to enable students to work at a smaller teacher-to-student ratio, working at their own pace and in areas of weakness. Students who do not qualify for Resource Room instruction yet do need extra assistance are provided accommodations within the classroom (i.e., tests read aloud, answers dictated to the teacher, flexible seating, the use of fidget tools, shortened assignments, or extra time to complete assignments, personal rubrics, etc.).

Traditions

The Crossing is home to many traditions at Peace Lutheran School. Every year, Peace staff assemble and decorate our Christmas tree so that it stands beautifully under the hanging cross, beside our traditional Nativity set. The entire student body comes to The Crossing to sit together for our annual Christmas chapel service. Other special gatherings in The Crossing include our annual school-wide observance of National Day of Prayer, and daily devotions during National Lutheran Schools Week.

K-8 Care

Here at Peace Lutheran School, we understand that unless you are a teacher, your workday probably doesn’t line up exactly with your child’s school day hours. That’s why we provide structured childcare for our K-8 students before and after school. Our K-8 Childcare runs from 6:30-7:35am before school and 3:15-6pm after school. Your child can use all of that time or just a portion of it — it is billed hourly. We are a year-round, full-service child care facility for all ages. That means we also offer Community Summer Camps for all K-5 children — even those who don’t attend Peace School.

During the school day, it hosts our indoor physical education classes. Our PE curriculum is designed to instruct the student in basic motor skills, development of coordination and perception, organized game playing, teamwork, and endurance. Three instructional periods per week per class are included in K-8 students’ schedules and devoted to PE instruction. Students gain knowledge and skills that will result in future choices of lifelong physical activities and develop an appreciation and respect for individual differences. Children in our Early Childhood Center have their own separate, 3,000-square-foot large motor gymnasium (the Weis Room). Click that location for more information. Our gymnasium also allows our entire school to come together for presentations and weekly chapel services. After the school day, our gym is used for Peace Athletics, performances and other activities. Our science classes at Peace are hands-on, inquiry-based learning with many observations, investigations and experiments. Students are taught to record data, draw and label diagrams, make claims and provide evidence. Writing is a huge component of our science program. Peace students utilize the many features that allow our classes to be exploratory and hands-on, including microscopes, gas jets with Bunsen burners, solar panels that can build solar-powered vehicles, a fume hood for chemical reactions, and science tables instead of classroom desks that allow for cooperative learning. panorama_D42AFEC0_FD4F_DAA4_41E4_30F561011EB8.subtitle = The Music Room at Peace Lutheran School complements our curriculum in preparing our students to become musical in three ways: tuneful, beautiful and artful. Students learn to become independent musicians through hands-on experiences with playing instruments, singing and dancing. Students’ skills are practiced during class and tested through creating their own music and performing their skills for their peers, in church and chapel services, and during special events such as Christmas programs and performing arts festivals. In addition to choir, band is also offered for Grades 5-8 at Peace. panorama_D440157D_FD4D_6E5F_41E1_3B8F23547B44.subtitle = At the center of Peace Lutheran School is what we refer to as “The Crossing,” or the school commons. It is exceptionally fitting, as The Cross is at the center of all we do at Peace. Hanging from the ceiling in The Crossing is a beautiful wooden cross handcrafted by a Peace church member, to signify the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus Christ so that those who believe in Him can live forever in Heaven (John 3:16). When standing under the cross in the center of The Crossing, one can see all the way down all three hallways containing classrooms in both our K-8 school and our Early Childhood Center. Not only is the space a bustling crosswalk for students throughout the school day, but it hosts the most special of events when students are brought together for a more intimate setting, including our school Christmas chapel service. panorama_D4418E88_FD4D_3AA5_41BB_5E2B37FFDD5D.subtitle = The Early Childhood Playground was built to cater specifically to the children of the Early Childhood Center at Peace Lutheran School. The Early Childhood playground has developmentally sized equipment for children age infant through preschool. The poured-in-place rubber surface makes it a soft space to crawl and gives padding for the occasional falls. The age-appropriate playground is the perfect outdoor complement to our indoor large motor gymnasium and scheduled in-class free play. panorama_D446657F_FD4F_2E5C_41CA_E13E8F2D1E69.subtitle = Peace Preschool has earned a stellar reputation throughout our community, having been named the “Best of the Best” Preschool in Saginaw County by newspaper readers three years in a row. All of our classes have at least one scheduled recess after their lunch break. Most of our lower elementary grades have a second scheduled recess. Peace considers recess times an important part of the well-rounded experience we offer our students. Recess contributes to physical health, socialization and a mental break from a full day of academics. panorama_D4489628_FD4D_2DE5_41B3_D8557B4D9EE1.subtitle = Welcome to the Peace Early Childhood Center at Peace Lutheran School. Peace has offered early childhood education here at the Lawndale Campus, caring for and educating children ages 3-4, since the K-8 school was built in 2003. In 2018, the opening of our nearly 8,000-square-foot Early Childhood Center addition at the campus brought with it expanded programs to include the care of infants and toddlers, as well as summer child care. Today, our ECC provides Christ-centered care for ages 6 weeks through eighth grade, as well as Christian education in our Preschool and Prekindergarten programs. The Peace ECC has been named the “Best of the Best Preschool in Saginaw County” by readers of the Township View newspaper for several years running. Our child care programs are open 6:30am-6pm year-round, including summer. panorama_D453DA19_FD4F_65A4_41E3_AE7CA06603B4.subtitle = One unique benefit of Peace Lutheran School is an on-site School Pastor, Rev. Matthew Hauser. With dedicated office hours on school days, Pastor Hauser oversees our weekly K-8 school and Early Childhood chapel services, leads Bible studies for Peace staff, and even grabs his guitar and heads into classrooms to lead songs or simply catch up with students. The pastor’s private, on-site space accommodates counseling sessions with Peace students, staff, and school and church families. Because Pastor Hauser is also in the preaching rotation with other Peace pastors, “Often I am also found in my office working on sermons or Bible studies or doing other ministry,” he says. panorama_D454B790_FD4D_2AA4_41E2_D13F6EED4C36.subtitle = The Media Center at Peace Lutheran School houses what one would expect to find in a traditional School Library on one side, while preparing students for the future in the Media Center side. Students’ understanding and use of technology is a top priority at Peace. While students do come to the Media Center for technology classes, the concepts and curriculum are also integrated into all other subject areas. Students have regular access to Chromebooks on our traveling Chrome Carts, and Grades 6-8 enjoy the benefits of our 1-to-1 Laptop Program so that students may use them for work in the classroom and at home, with the benefit of regular updates and maintenance by Peace IT staff. All K-8 students utilize Google Classroom, helping them access school assignments and communications wherever learning takes place. In addition, we put a high priority on teaching our students the importance of good “Digital Citizenship,” so that students learn lifelong lessons in online etiquette, privacy and safety. panorama_D454CE1A_FD4F_DDA4_41D5_D980411D7472.subtitle = The modern Art Studio at Peace Lutheran School was added as part of the $3-million addition and upgrade at the school in 2018 that also included our Science Lab and Early Childhood Center. At Peace, every artist has a toolbox he or she can draw from to create art. The Elements of Art are the tools students pull out of that box: Line, Value, Color, Shape, Texture, Space and Form. From kindergarten through eighth grade, we recognize these in the world around us, talk about how other artists or cultures use them to create art, and then practice using them ourselves as we build our own skills and techniques. Peace students are blessed to create their art in a modern studio that includes a kiln, three pottery wheels, a 3-D printer and more! panorama_D4550C4C_FD4F_5DBC_41E5_9162D5820334.subtitle = In the Early Childhood Center at Peace Lutheran School, we believe each infant has his or her own schedule. The day will include napping, eating, quiet play, active play and opportunities outside as weather permits. The curriculum of our program includes providing your infant with a wide variety of activities and experiences that will enable them to develop new skills and learn more about their world. Click the Hot Spots to see our Infant Care daily schedule, and to learn about our Toddler Care at Peace. \ \ NURTURING \ Through nurturing interactions, attachment grows. When nurturing times are quality times, much learning takes place. Feeding, for example, not only promotes attachment between infant and the primary nurturer; it also provides a variety of sensory experiences, much pleasure and satisfaction, and an opportunity to learn social and self-help skills. Info is kept on a daily care journal sheet so that parents receive a comprehensive and detailed report about their child’s physical and developmental changes and/or needs. Your infant’s primary nurturer will be part of a daily team of nurturers so that your infant has continuity of care. \ \ FREE PLAY \ Through play, infants enjoy open-ended exploration. They are not confined by rules, procedures or outcomes. Infants at play have self-direction. They have power, make discoveries, work on problems and make choices, and they find out what interests them. Your child’s primary nurturer promotes free play by providing time, space and materials. The adult role is to set up the environment and to remain available but non-directive while the infants play, intervening selectively to prevent children from hurting each other and to help them work at solving problems. panorama_D457BDBA_FD4F_3EE4_41B6_FCB8A1B69021.subtitle = One of the largest parts of the nearly 8,000-square-foot Early Childhood Center addition to Peace Lutheran School in 2018 was our Weis Gathering Place, or Weis Room. At about 3,000 square feet, this space is home to many activities at Peace. It is named for our beloved former Pastor C. William Weis, whose vision and hard work before his death helped make the Early Childhood Center and classroom additions possible. Throughout the week, Early Childhood students use the Weis Room as a large motor gymnasium, allowing our tiniest tykes a dedicated space separate from the older children in our K-8 school. Before and after the school day, the Weis Room provides plenty of space for the children in our K-8 care to spread out and work on homework, play with friends and participate in organized activities. On weekends, the Weis Room converts to a sanctuary for our Saturday evening worship service. Peace is blessed to meet those needs with excellence. Our teaching staff, modern facility and faith-based curriculum are just some of the great reasons to see if Peace is the right fit for you. Among the features of our K-8 school: \ • State-Certified and Synodically Trained Teachers \ • Choral/Instrumental Programs \ • Media/Technology Lab \ • NLSA Accredited, School of Distinction \ • Grade 4-8 Athletics \ • Grade K-8 Spanish Education \ • Fine Arts & Drama \ • Hot Lunch Program \ \ STANDARDS & METHODS \ Our K-8 standards include: Christian Formation, Science, Math, English Language Arts, Social Studies, Spanish, Art, Physical Education/Health, Music and Technology. The predominantly student-centered teaching methods used by Peace teachers include: Group work, partner work, presentations, project-based learning, and inquiry-based learning. Our teacher-centered methods include lectures and demonstrations. \ \ ASSESSMENT \ To track student progress, Peace administers assessment tests from the Northwest Evaluation Association, or NWEA. NWEA is administered three times a year (fall, winter and spring), which creates assessment solutions that precisely measure growth and proficiency — and provide insights to help tailor instruction. Compared to national public schools, Peace district grade-level means are above the NWEA national norms in all grades and in all tested subject areas: Math, Reading & Language. This is a direct reflection of the rigorous and meaningful instruction Peace Lutheran School provides. panorama_D5B4F223_FD4D_65EB_41E9_6FD60458F48B.subtitle = Welcome to Peace Lutheran School, home of the Panthers, in Saginaw Township, Michigan. Peace serves students Grades K-8 as a member of the Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) Michigan District. We are a National Lutheran School Association (NLSA) accredited school. The NLSA has recognized Peace as a National School of Distinction — one of only five schools in the United States named as such in 2018. At Peace, our mission is to “GATHER, GROW and GO to Make Disciples,” and our philosophy is as easy as ABC: \ Academic Excellence \ Beyond the Basics \ Christ-Centered ### Title album_06984051_1434_EC73_41A5_76D00925180B.label = Laptop album_06984051_1434_EC73_41A5_76D00925180B_0.label = Laptop album_06E6A972_1433_3C30_41A9_53C902017712.label = Resource album_06E6A972_1433_3C30_41A9_53C902017712_0.label = Resource album_5A57A5BE_6472_3D5E_41B3_3BB031364D62.label = PICS album_5A57A5BE_6472_3D5E_41B3_3BB031364D62_0.label = Blank album_5E4D9897_6475_D32F_41C0_F79E553FA4B8.label = TEXT album_5E4D9897_6475_D32F_41C0_F79E553FA4B8_0.label = Blank album_E90BE95B_F96F_D77D_41E1_5A440149FF3D.label = ChristmasMiracle album_E90BE95B_F96F_D77D_41E1_5A440149FF3D_0.label = ChristmasMiracle album_F683C275_F96E_3534_41BB_D8A95CA4263B.label = PreK album_F683C275_F96E_3534_41BB_D8A95CA4263B_0.label = PreK album_F6873C7C_F96A_4D3B_41E7_956AEA1ADBFC.label = Athletics album_F6873C7C_F96A_4D3B_41E7_956AEA1ADBFC_0.label = Athletics album_F687544F_F96E_DD54_41DB_49E824FE6F48.label = PeaceLutheranSchool album_F687544F_F96E_DD54_41DB_49E824FE6F48_0.label = PeaceLutheranSchool album_F687D4CA_F96E_DD5F_41E2_195677D6B4CE.label = MediaCenter album_F687D4CA_F96E_DD5F_41E2_195677D6B4CE_0.label = MediaCenter album_F68872BE_F96E_F537_41A9_7CF723B0844C.label = Pastor album_F688CC3E_F96E_4D34_41B8_C188C1889A52.label = Infants album_F688CC3E_F96E_4D34_41B8_C188C1889A52_0.label = Infants album_F68B99DD_F96E_7775_41C9_69B71DD3F305.label = K8Care album_F68B99DD_F96E_7775_41C9_69B71DD3F305_0.label = K8Care album_F693DB0F_F96E_54D4_41ED_AE17636CEEC6.label = LionKing album_F693DB0F_F96E_54D4_41ED_AE17636CEEC6_0.label = LionKing album_F6969A9B_F96E_35FD_41E9_7D0F920C04B0.label = CrossingsCollage album_F6969A9B_F96E_35FD_41E9_7D0F920C04B0_0.label = CrossingsCollage album_F6D0C599_F96A_3FFC_41EE_8E038C642479.label = Toddlers album_F6D0C599_F96A_3FFC_41EE_8E038C642479_0.label = Toddlers album_F6DC430C_F969_D4DB_41DB_ADC61C6920D2.label = TeachersFromRooftop album_F6DC430C_F969_D4DB_41DB_ADC61C6920D2_0.label = TeachersFromRooftop album_F6E6A93E_F969_D734_41DA_80FC4740E097.label = Stream album_F6E6A93E_F969_D734_41DA_80FC4740E097_0.label = Stream album_F6E7F62E_F969_FCD7_41E4_3A8AC4BC6CFD.label = SummerCamps album_F6E7F62E_F969_FCD7_41E4_3A8AC4BC6CFD_0.label = SummerCamps album_F6E97BCE_F969_CB57_41E8_3BCC5A3A0A27.label = SchoolCirclingGym album_F6E97BCE_F969_CB57_41E8_3BCC5A3A0A27_0.label = SchoolCirclingGym album_F6EFDDB2_F96E_4FCF_41DE_25AB9D0BD2DB.label = SaturdayWorship album_F6EFDDB2_F96E_4FCF_41DE_25AB9D0BD2DB_0.label = SaturdayWorship album_F6F43E97_F96E_4DF5_41B0_DD7464B57A89.label = Preschool4 album_F6F43E97_F96E_4DF5_41B0_DD7464B57A89_0.label = Preschool4 album_F6F64D4E_F96E_4F54_41D1_8EA0938F0B94.label = PreschoolPlus album_F6F64D4E_F96E_4F54_41D1_8EA0938F0B94_0.label = PreschoolPlus album_F6FF605D_F96E_5575_41EA_6E0D36A1DC33.label = Preschool3 album_F6FF605D_F96E_5575_41EA_6E0D36A1DC33_0.label = Preschool3 panorama_4E7171DF_5E6E_C601_41D2_D8619E4E6381.label = LOCATIONS panorama_4E7967B0_5E6D_CA00_41C8_0B7474296BE2.label = INFO panorama_D420AECE_FD4C_FABD_41D2_5F024905E514.label = Gymnasium panorama_D42162C9_FD4F_2AA7_417C_E2FC0DAC2CCF.label = Science Lab panorama_D42AFEC0_FD4F_DAA4_41E4_30F561011EB8.label = Music Room panorama_D440157D_FD4D_6E5F_41E1_3B8F23547B44.label = The Crossing panorama_D4418E88_FD4D_3AA5_41BB_5E2B37FFDD5D.label = Early Childhood Playground panorama_D446657F_FD4F_2E5C_41CA_E13E8F2D1E69.label = EC Classroom panorama_D447C8ED_FD4D_E67C_41E4_6B46CC9ABE3D.label = K-8 Playground panorama_D4489628_FD4D_2DE5_41B3_D8557B4D9EE1.label = Early Childhood Center Entrance panorama_D453DA19_FD4F_65A4_41E3_AE7CA06603B4.label = Pastor's Office panorama_D454B790_FD4D_2AA4_41E2_D13F6EED4C36.label = Media Center panorama_D454CE1A_FD4F_DDA4_41D5_D980411D7472.label = Art Room panorama_D4550C4C_FD4F_5DBC_41E5_9162D5820334.label = Infants Room panorama_D457BDBA_FD4F_3EE4_41B6_FCB8A1B69021.label = ECC Weis Room panorama_D4590D3A_FD4C_FFE4_41E4_08351B498D10.label = K-8 Classroom panorama_D5B4F223_FD4D_65EB_41E9_6FD60458F48B.label = K-8 School Entrance photo_197FEF4A_1483_DE32_4170_A0D6E7A1511E.label = Pastor3 photo_197FEF4A_1483_DE32_4170_A0D6E7A1511E.label = Pastor3 video_015141BF_1453_6C30_41B3_0B84179E4352.label = ECPlayground_Trim video_BCCC8A66_FD4D_7A6D_4196_B04193338356.label = Band video_BF53721C_FD43_25DD_41EF_71861AC08879.label = StaffCaroling video_C01B6EAA_FD4D_7AE4_41C4_FBB2098D25EC.label = Choir video_C01CC2F0_FD4D_6A64_4150_9C6A2CBBD018.label = Preschool Music Day video_C01CD7AA_FD4D_6AE4_41EC_596F60EEC75C.label = Spanish video_C01DE5F8_FD4C_EE64_41DE_09463F03C7A3.label = K8Chapel video_C275B18B_FD4C_E6A4_41E5_1F7C65602F38.label = Jitterbugs video_C2A6853D_FD4F_2FDF_416F_65F5FF9D8EDB.label = Science video_C3862598_FD4D_6EA4_41D2_8D262FC5C14F.label = ThisLittleLightOfMine video_C3F2FF40_FD4F_3BA4_41EA_132321A10A3E.label = WeisGym ##
